One for All is a gender-bent retelling of The Three Musketeers, in which a girl with a chronic illness trains as a Musketeer and uncovers secrets, sisterhood, and self-love.

Tania de Batz is most herself with a sword in her hand. Everyone thinks her near-constant dizziness makes her weak, nothing but “a sick girl.” But Tania wants to be strong, independent, a fencer like her father—a former Musketeer and her greatest champion. Then Papa is brutally, mysteriously murdered. His dying wish? For Tania to attend finishing school. But L’Académie des Mariées, Tania realizes, is no finishing school. It’s a secret training ground for new Musketeers: women who are socialites on the surface, but strap daggers under their skirts, seduce men into giving up dangerous secrets, and protect France from downfall. And they don’t shy away from a sword fight.

With her newfound sisters at her side, Tania feels that she has a purpose, that she belongs. But then she meets Étienne, her target in uncovering a potential assassination plot. He’s kind, charming—and might have information about what really happened to her father. Torn between duty and dizzying emotion, Tania will have to decide where her loyalties lie...or risk losing everything she’s ever wanted.

Lillie Lainoff's debut novel is a fierce, whirlwind adventure about the depth of found family, the strength that goes beyond the body, and the determination it takes to fight for what you love. Includes an author's note about her personal experience with Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome.

World Building

Lainoff’s world-building in “One for All” is commendable, though not exceptional. The author skillfully describes the settings and creates a sense of place that transports readers into the story. However, there are moments when the descriptions lack the depth and richness that would fully immerse readers in the world.

“The streets of the bustling city were filled with vendors selling their wares, their voices blending into a symphony of sounds.”

While this provides a glimpse of the setting, a more vivid and enthralling portrayal would have enhanced the overall world-building.

Character Development

Lainoff crafts a diverse cast of characters with distinct personalities and motivations, allowing readers to form strong connections with them. The growth and transformation of the characters are evident throughout the story, making them relatable and gripping.

Tania de Batz is a compelling protagonist, balancing strength and vulnerability as she navigates her chronic illness, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). Her internal struggles add depth, as she remarks,

“I am not weak. My body is, but my mind, my heart—they will always fight.”

Her journey from doubt to confidence is rewarding, and her relationships with fellow Musketeers feel genuine. While the main cast is well-developed, some supporting characters lack the same level of depth, which occasionally makes their motivations feel unclear. Despite this, Tania’s character arc is both inspiring and emotionally resonant.

“I used to be afraid of taking risks, but now I see the importance of stepping out of my comfort zone.”

Plot Pace & Development

The novel maintains a mostly steady pace, blending training sequences, court intrigue, and action. Tania’s transformation into a Musketeer is engaging, though some parts drag, particularly when the narrative delves into repetitive self-doubt. The pacing slows in the middle as Tania grapples with imposter syndrome, which, while essential to her arc, at times feels repetitive. However, the action sequences and moments of camaraderie between the Musketeers keep the narrative from stagnating.

A highlight is the balance between action and introspection, particularly in scenes where Tania begins to trust her own capabilities. “My fear was still there, but it no longer controlled me. I could be afraid and still fight. I could be afraid and still win.”

This shift in mindset adds momentum to the latter half of the novel, ensuring that when the stakes are raised, Tania feels ready to face them.

The tension builds effectively toward the climax, with well-crafted duels and betrayals adding to the stakes. However, some plot twists, particularly regarding who can and cannot be trusted, are predictable. While the stakes feel real, and Tania’s journey is compelling, the novel could have benefited from more unexpected turns to keep readers on edge. Despite this, the climax is satisfying, providing a fitting resolution to Tania’s journey of self-acceptance and proving her worth beyond societal expectations.

Language, Flow, and Structure (Writing Quality)

Lainoff’s prose is elegant yet accessible, with a fluidity that captures both the physical and emotional intensity of the narrative. The writing shines in moments of introspection.

“Pain does not make me weak. It makes me aware. It makes me understand the fight is never truly over.”

The novel is well-structured, balancing dialogue, action, and description effectively. However, at times, the prose becomes repetitive, especially regarding Tania’s inner turmoil, which could have been condensed to maintain momentum.

Themes & Literary Devices

The novel excels in exploring themes of perseverance, identity, and defying societal expectations. Tania’s chronic illness is seamlessly integrated into the narrative, reinforcing the message that strength is not defined by physical ability.

“A sword is only as strong as the hand that wields it—and the heart that believes in it.”

This symbolizes both physical and emotional resilience. The novel’s feminist undertones add depth, emphasizing camaraderie and empowerment.

Creativity, Originality & Predictability

The concept of a gender-swapped Three Musketeers is fresh, and Tania’s unique perspective makes it stand out from other retellings. However, some plot points, particularly in the latter half, follow a predictable trajectory. A key revelation regarding trust and betrayal, though well-executed, can be anticipated early on. Tania’s struggle against societal expectations adds originality, but the overall arc of proving oneself in a male-dominated space is a familiar one.

“They saw a girl. I saw a fighter. Only one of us was right.”

The novel successfully puts a new lens on an old tale, though not without some expected turns.

Emotional Impact

Tania’s journey is deeply moving, especially for readers who relate to chronic illness or overcoming adversity. Her vulnerability is palpable, as she confesses,

“Every step feels like a battle. But battles are meant to be won.”

The friendships she forms, the betrayals she endures, and her triumphs create an emotional arc that lingers. The novel’s conclusion is both satisfying and inspiring, leaving readers with a sense of empowerment.

Overall

One for All delivers an empowering and refreshing retelling of The Three Musketeers, centering on a fierce and unforgettable heroine. Lillie Lainoff masterfully intertwines themes of resilience, found family, and self-acceptance, crafting a swashbuckling adventure that stands out for its representation of chronic illness. Tania’s struggle with postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is seamlessly woven into the narrative, making her victories—both in battle and in self-confidence—all the more impactful. While the world-building could have been more immersive and the plot pacing wavers at times, the novel shines in its emotional depth, evocative prose, and engaging character dynamics. The camaraderie between the Musketeer sisters adds heart to the story, reinforcing themes of female solidarity and empowerment. Though some plot points are predictable, Tania’s journey from self-doubt to self-assurance is compelling, making One for All a must-read for fans of historical fiction, feminist retellings, and character-driven adventures.
